BOSTON, Va.--Virginia Korrell rode a winner over timber as well as two second placed horses, one over hurdles and one on the flat, while Kathy Neislon saddled a winner over hurdles and a third on the flat at the Rappahnnock Hunt Point-to-Point on Saturday, March 2.
Korrell rode Pleasecallmeback, trained by Billy Meister and owned by Larry Levy, to win the $1,000, 2 1/2 mile Maiden Timber by a nose over Karl Cares, trained by Julie Gomena.
"This was Pleasecallmeback's first time over timber," said Korrell. "He ran over hurdles last year for Keri Brion. I had never ridden him before. I was still in Ireland when Billy called and asked me to ride him. Billy said that he'd been hunting and had been schooled a lot. I just got back from Ireland about 10 days ago. He jumped very well. I'm going to ride him next in the team race."
Korrell said that her time riding out in Ireland had been great, but that she hadn't gotten to ride in a race because, with the huge mount of rain there, so many meets had been cancelled, plus the horse she'd been scheduled to ride didn't like deep going.
Korrell was second in the Maiden Hurdle on Gospel Way, also trained by Meister.
"Gospel Way ran twice last year, trained by his owner Larry Levy," said Korrell. "He jumped well."
Korrell also rode Eye of Gunfighter, owned by Celtic Venture Stable and Hickory Made Stables and trained by Lawrence Smith, who was second to Prince Khozan, trained by Betty McCue, in the $1,000 Open Flat.
"It was just a schooling run for him," said Korrell. "He ran a full circuit of the course after the finish before I could pull him up. He's going to run at Blue Ridge next, and I'll ride him."
NEILSON saddled Massie Land and Cattle and Cattle LLC's Go Take Charge, ridden by Gerard Galligan, to win the $1,000. 2 mile Maiden Hurdle by 5 1/2 lengths over Gospel Way.
"This horse has been a long term project," said Neilson. "When we first got him,, he had wind issues. We got that resolved, and we started him jumping, but he couldn't get it, so we ran him on the flat. He ran some pretty nice flat races, but he couldn't break his maiden. So we schooled him a lot over all kinds of logs. Gerard rode him at Rappahannock, and he finally put it all together and jumped well and won."
Neislon also saddled Ruthenian, owned by Hard Game LLC, to place third in the Open Flat.
Barrister, owned by Black and Blue Stable and trained and ridden by Forrest Kelly, won the $1,500, 3 mile Open Timber by 3 1/2 lengths over Southern Charity, trained by Levy.
Keys Discount, owned, trained and ridden by Sam Cockburn, as the only entry in the Foxhunter Timber, ran with Barrister and Southern Charity in the Open Timber but won the Foxhunters.
Bohemian Dancer, owned and trained by Jeremy Gillam and ridden by Felix Astudillo, won the Maiden Flat by 4 1//2 lengths over Band Tour, trained by McCue.
