NEW KENT, Va.--Arch Kingsley saddled Cibolian to win a Maiden Hurdle, the first steeplechase of the summer season at Colonial Downs on Friday, July 15.
Hudson River Farm's Cibolian,, ridden by Steve Mulqueen, won by a neck over High Deff, trained by Kathy Neilson, who was just a neck in front of Nathan Detroit, trained by Neil Morris in a tightly contested finish.
"I bought him at Keeneland last November from a horses in training sale,"said Kingsley. "He had nice form and a great pedigree. He's a nice type, Plus, I did some checking and the connections that had him liked him and hadn't wanted to lose him."
A 6-year-old gelding by Temple City out of a Pulpit mare, Cibolian had been stakes placed and had run consistently in the money in allowance races on the flat.
IN HIS FIRST race over fences for Kingsley, he ran third in a maiden hurdle at Great Meadow.
"I ran him in the Belmont Gold Cup Stakes on June 9, and he ran a very respectable fifth," said Kingsley. "I was using a flat stakes as a prep for a maiden hurdle. It's the oldest rick in the books."
"He'll go to Saratoga for an allowance hurdle race in August," said Kingsley.
Cibolian finished in 4:06.89, 14 seconds fast than the winner in the second maiden hurdle at Colonial, which was for fillies and mares..
In the second Maiden Hurdle, this for fillies and mares, Cyril Murphy saddled Irv Naylor's Gold Charm (Ire), ridden by Barry Foley, to win by 2 3/4 lengths over Lacey Underall, trained by Keri Brion and ridden by Nell Boucher, who did an amazing job to stay on when Lacey Underall almost fell over a fence on the backside while leading.
This was Gold Charm's second race in this country after running in handicaps in England where he finished third twice from 10 starts.
Gold Charm ran second for Murphy in his first race in this country at Radnor Races in May.
