By Tod Marks for NSA
Emma CareyThe National Steeplechase Association has a new member of its central office team.
Emma Cary has been hired to replace Harper McVey as assistant to the director of racing Bill Gallo.
McVey recently was accepted into the Godolphin Flying Start program at Kildangan Stud in Ireland, which will take her to five countries in two years, studying and working with thoroughbred industry leaders.
Cary, 28, is from Melville, N.Y., and currently resides in Hockessin, Del., not far from NSA’s headquarters in Elkton, Md.
A graduate of Goldey - Beacom College in Wilmington, Del., Cary earned a bachelor’s degree in business marketing and management.
In addition to her formal education, Cary interned with Past The Wire as an editorial assistant and social media coordinator.
She also enjoyed a position with the Maryland Jockey Club on their marketing team for the 2022 Preakness Stakes.
CARY'S primary responsibilities with the NSA, the governing body of jump racing in the U.S., entails assisting Gallo with entries, nominations, the seasonal condition books, and annual yearbook.
She also is involved with coordinating the assignment of race-day officials.
Growing up, Cary was involved with show horses and show jumping, which gave her the opportunity to travel across the U.S. and Europe.
"Through family connections, I became involved with horse racing, which led me to work for trainer Graham Motion,” she said. "At Graham’s I’ve been lucky enough to ride some top horses in the mornings, including Spendarella and Nagirroc, as well as working in the office and helping run the social media networks in the afternoon.”
Outside of racing, Cary enjoys figure skating, traveling, photography, and videography.
“I was attracted to the job,” Cary said, “because it will allow me to experience a different side of the industry, and support the horsemen and the sport of steeplechase racing from an administrative standpoint. I hope to grow with the NSA team and deepen my industry knowledge, to become an asset to our OTR and community of race meet organizers.”
