NEW KENT, Va.--Arch Kingsley won another race, but his time on the flat with Cainudothetwist at Colonial Downs on Aug. 3.
"I was sitting on the tarmac in an airplane headed for Ireland when I heard she'd won," said Kingsley. "I love that mare, and we own her now."
Cainudothetwistwon a $44,000, 1 1/8 mile Maiden Claiming race on the turf by 3/4 length.
"We put her in that as a prep race for the Randy Rouse steeplechase at Colonial in eight days," said Kingsley. "It was meant to be just a gallop around as a prep. She did a little better than that."
"I was on my way to Ireland where Taylor is riding Sunday at Galway," he said. "She's riding Chef d'Etat, the horse she won on over there before. She's riding in an amateur flat race for Shark Hanlon."
Kingsley had a horse entered in one of the steeplechase races at Colonial on Aug. 4, but those races wee cancelled after heavy rains soaked the turf course.
KERI BRION, another steeplechase trainer, also won a flat race, saddling Steinmetz Equine Holdings Urban Myth to win a $38,500, 1 1/4 mile Allowance race by a nose at Delaware Park on July 21.
Although better known as a steeplechase trainer, Brion has said she wants to follow in the footsteps of Jonathan Sheppard, for whom she was assistant trainer before going out on her own,
Sheppard had a top group of flat horses, including Eclipse Award winners, on the flat as well as over fences.
GRAHAM MOTION won five races, including a stakes, in the past couple of weeks.
Augustin Stable and Catherine Parke's Sparkle Blue won the $100,000, 1 1/8 mile Big Dreyfus Stakes on the turf for fillies and mares 3 and up.
Sparkle Blue swung four wide on the turn, took control at the eighth pole and drew away to win by 2 1/4 lengths.
Motion had three winners on July 27, two of them at Colonial Downs.
Miss San Gabriel, owned by Robert LaPenta, Madaket Stables and ERJ Racing won a $55,000, 1 mile Claiming race on the turf at Saratoga by 2 1/4 lengths.
At Colonial, Wertheimer et Frere's homebred Tok Tok won the first race, a $61,000, 5 1/2 furlong Maiden Special Weight for 2 year olds by 1/2 length.
Then Stonestreet Stables' homebred Willakia won a $70,000, 1 1/16mile Allowance turf race by 6 1/4 lengths.
HPG Thoroughbreds' King Vega (GB) was in a dead heat for the win with Commandeer in a $90,000, 1 1/8 mile Allowance Optional Claiming race on the turf at Colonial on Aug. 3.
BERNIE HOUGHTON had three winners at Penn National.
Daniel Lunceford's Shutup and Hang On won a $23,047, 1 mile and 70 yards Starter Optional Claiming race by a neck on July 14.
Houghton also placed third in that race with Douglas Gibson's African Angel.
Dianne Stern's homebred Foxy Junior won a $28,000, 1 mile Allowance race by 2 1/4 lengths on July 26.
Joseph Viviani's Morgans Cove, bred by Houghton's mother Betsy, won a $15,400, 6 furlong Claiming race by 1/2 length on July 28.
MICHAEL MATZ also had three winners.
Skara Glen's Lagonisi was an impressive winner of a $39,345, 1 mile Maiden Special Weight race for 2-year-old fillies by 8 3/4 lengths at Delaware Park on July 26.
Matz had two winners on Aug. 2, the first was Baoma Corp.'s Top Blue in a $38,000, 5 1/2 furlong Maiden Special Weight race for 2-year-od fillies by 1 1/2 lengths at Delaware Park.
Michael Moran's homebred Corinna won a $40,000, 1 mile Claiming race on the turf by 1 1/2 lengths at Colonial.
