"Late Frost's mother died at birth, so the filly has always been around people," said Matz."So she's very personable. She's very competitive, as you can see from her record. She broke her maiden in her first start, then won an allowance race and was second in a stakes as a 2-year-old. We gave her a little break, and this was her first start back as a 3-year-old."
"I think we'll look for another Pa-bred stakes for her," he said. "They're worth $100,000, so we might as well take advantage of her being Pa-bred. She's also Delaware certified, and you get 50 percent back in breeder's awards in Delaware, so we'll keep her in Pennsylvania and Delaware."
EMORY A. HAMILTON'S homebred La Traviesa won a $52,780, 6 furlong Maiden Special Weight for 3-year-old fillies by 3 lengths at Pimlico on June 2.
This was the filly's fourth start and second as a 3-year-old with a record of one second and two fourths.
La Traviesa is owned by my sister-in-law," said Matz. "She's been knocking on the door. She had some issues. We put blinkers on her, and that did the trick. We'll probably look for an allowance for her."
Baoma Corp.'s Wudi won a $52,600, 1 1/16 mile Maiden Special Weight for fillies and mares 3, 4,and 5 years old, by a head at Pimlico on June 3.
Wudi sold for $725,000 as a 2-year-old and ran three times in California, trained by Bob Baffert.
"Wudi was an expensive filly at a 2-year-old in training sale," said Matz. "They felt she didn't fit in California, so they brought her back East. She's high strung, so they though she'd do better at Fair Hill. We got her maiden broken, so we'll see where we go from there."
Matz also saddled Hidden Creek Farm's Golden Belief to win a $47,480, 1 1/8 mile Maiden Claiming race for fillies and mares 3, 4, and 5 years old by 3/4 length at Pimlico on May 27.
This was her 11th start and fourth as a -year-old, and shed been running in maiden special weight races where she'd had three seconds and a third.
"She's owned by Mike Polanski," said Matz. "He owned a lot of Margie Engle's good horses. She was second twice this year in Florida. She's just been unlucky."
GRAHAM MOTION had two winners on June 3, including a stakes win.
Ry-Zan Sun Racing's Mission of Joy won the $225,000, G3, 1 1/8 mile Regret Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by 1 1/2 lengths at Churchill Downs.
This was her fourth win, including three stakes, and a third from six starts and earnings of $289,567.
Miss San Gabriel, owned by Robert LaPenta, Madaket stables and ERJ Racing, won a $52,600, 1 mile turf Maiden Special Weight for fillies and mare 3, 4, and 5 year olds by 4 3/4 lengths at Pimlico.
BERNIE HOUGHTON had another winner at Penn National.
Edward J.Madden's Edward Madden won an $11,800, 5 1/2 furlong Claiming race by a nose on June 1.
Andy Simoff bred the 3-year-old gelding and named him Edward Madden, and Madden claimed him last April.
