GRANTVILLE, Pa.--James H Eshterman's homebred Trolley Ride, trained by Bernie Houghton, won the $100,000. 1 1/16 mile Lyphard Stakes for fillies and mares at Penn National on May 28.
"Trolley Ride was bred and is owned by Kim Eshterman, who has worked for us for over 40 years," said Houghton. "Jim is her husband. Kim works at our farm. She breaks all our yearlings."
The Lyphard Stakes was originally scheduled to be run on the turf, but after heavy rain it was switched to the main track, which was listed as sloppy.
"I was hoping it would come off the turf," said Houghton. "She's always been a nice mare, but she doesn't like the turf."
This was Trolley Ride's first stakes win after having won a number of allowance races.
She was rated mid-pack in the six horse field, went three wide on the turn and went on to win by 1/2 length.
She has now won nine times with two seconds and four thirds from 26 starts and earnings of $323,654.
