Pat Coath of Watne, Pa. placed first in Candid Photos with this picture of jockey Flavien Pratt reaching down to pat Hot Rod Charlie on the way to the post in the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby, which he won.
Photos are judged on clarity, composition and the difficulty of getting the shot, and the expressions on the faces of Pratt and the groom leading Hot Rod Charlie are caught so well here.
Notice that Hot Rod Charlie's tongue is lolling out of his mouth.
