"He's Not Really Lame, But He's Not Going Quite Right," said Darlene Latshaw, LMT

Latshaw 1 One of the most common phone calls I receive is from owners who tell me their horse isn't lame, but he's just a little off and their Vet hasn't been able to pinpoint anything definitive.

After a bit of discussion, they explain details like their horse being short strided, flying changes or tempe changes that are suddenly difficult, short choppy strides at the trot, going "hollow", just a whole host of issues.

Sometimes it's more of a behavioral issue- Irritability, being "hot" or anxious.

That's where holistic bodywork can be incredibly helpful.

Muscular stiffness can present itself in numerous ways, like those mentioned above.

It can also be felt in specific areas, or throughout the entire body.

Speaking as a Licensed Massage Therapist and Certified Magnawave Practioner, that's where things begin to get interesting.

Clues begin to present themselves and point towards an underlying cause.

Latshaw 2 For instance, full body stiffness can be caused by strenuous work, but it can also be caused by issues like Lyme disease or Anaplasmosis or a bout of laminitis.

Specific areas of sensitivity can point to soft tissue strains or sprains, poorly fitting tack, arthritic changes or even less than ideal training methods.

Bodywork can be beneficial in two ways.

It can help pinpoint specific areas of concern, which often leads to a conversation with your Vet (or Blacksmith, Dentist, Saddle Fitter, etc.) and it can help relieve soreness.

In relieving soft tissue stiffness or soreness, I typically use a combination of Massage Therapy and Magnawave treatments (PEMF).

Latshaw 3 There are also times when I find the addition of Red Light therapy, ice, heat or even essential oils to help resolve an issue.

And, as a Licensed Massage Therapist, I use all of those modalities and more to keep my Equestrian clients just as comfortable and stress-free as their horses! I work with clients in my office in Royersdford Mon. 9-4 and Wed. 11-6, and I make farm calls Tues, Thurs and Fri.

This means no anesthesia and your horse is in and out the same day.

MR imaging has quickly become the gold standard for diagnostic imaging as part of a comprehensive lameness work up.

MR imaging allows for the evaluation of soft tissue and bony structures simultaneously and is particularly useful in imaging the foot, where the hoof wall precludes the evaluation of soft tissue structures beneath it.

Equigen 2 The images are read by a board-certified radiologist and a report is available in 48 hours.

Dr. Kent has been in equine sports medicine practice since completing veterinary school in 1999, and she has been in on the ground floor of using standing MR imaging in private practice since 2004.

Dr. Kent has been fortunate enough to circumnavigate the globe accompanying and supporting international sport horses as they participate at the highest levels of competition.

While studying holistic health and education with a naturopathic doctor I knew I wanted to use the modalities I was learning on horses .

Talley 1 I found horses were willing receipts for my therapeutic touch practice sessions .

I wanted to take the massage I was learning and apply it to horses .

My teacher recommended I practice on humans for three years to build up my strength and endurance .

She also told me about a program in Virginia that offered equine sports massage .
