Grace Debney on Zarina de Vidau won the Devon Speed Derby over Jimmy Torano

DEVON, Pa.--Grace Debney of Great Britain on Zarina de Vidau not only won the $38,700 Devon Speed Derby Friday evening, May 31, she did it dramatically.

Debney did have a rail down, so four seconds were added to her time of 74.46, giving her a final time of 78.45 to beat Jimmy Torano on Kochio Z, clean in 78,82.

The top six places after Debney had all gone clean, so Debney actually finished over four seconds faster than anyone else in the Derby, an incredible margin.

Debney said she hadn't really realized how much faster she had gone than anyone else.

"It was a lot of fun," she said.

"I think I was probably faster at the start of the round and then with the turn to the second to last fence," said Debney..

The course, set by Alan Wade, started in the Dixon Oval, then went under the "Where Champions Meet" sign into the Wheeler ring, where there were five fences, and then back into the Dixon Oval for the finish.

"I'VE HAD ZARINA for five years, since she was 8, so we've been able to build up a good relationship," said Debney. "She really fights to win."

"She was injured last year, so we have a surrogate foal from her," said Debney. "The foal's by Grandorado, so we're hoping to add some scope and speed."

Debney has maintained her British citizenship and competes for Great Britain, but she has a green card and lives in Hamden, Mass., where she has a farm.

"It's me and one groom on the farm, and another groom meets me at shows," she said. "I have 25 to 30 boarders and five of mine, all bay mares."

"I moved to this country s a young child, so I've lost my accent," said Debney.  "Most of my family still live in England, so I spend a lot of time there. I love to represent Great Britain."

Earlier in the day, David Oberkircher on Vulkato won the $20,000, 1.45 m Amateur Jumpers in a three horse jump-off, going clean in 34.017 to beat Baylee McKeever on Formidable, clean in 34.375.

Alexander Alston on Oak Grove's Carlyle was eliminated in the jump-off to finish third.

ith that win, Oberkircher on Vulkato won the Amateur Jumper Championship.

In Amateur Owner Hunter, 18-35, Augusta Iwaskli on Small Love and Caroline ingalls on Concerto won the over fences classes and Blakely Ansley n Superlative won the under saddle.

In the over 35 division, Stephanie Dankato on Casanova Royal won an over fences class and John Ingram on Romeo won the other over fences class and the under saddle.
