St. Gallen Nations Cup cancelled, Karl Cook won the Grand Prix in Rome last week

LAUSANNE, Switzerland--The third leg of the League of Nations, the Nations Cup in St. Gallen, was cancelled following a prolonged period of heavy rain in Europe over the past few days.

“Despite extensive planning, the weather conditions made the situation extremely difficult and we very much appreciate the efforts of riders, chefs, grooms, officials and the Organizer in trying to find solutions in the challenging circumstances,"said Todd Hinde, FEI Jumping Director. "While this is regrettable, we believe under the circumstances this was the right decision to make.”

The League of Nations consists of 10 nations competing in four Nations Cup classes for points to decide the eight teams that will compete in the Final in Barcelona in October.

The league will continue with the next leg in Rotterdam on June 21, and the standings for Barcelona will be calculated based on the three qualifiers of Abu Dhabi, Ocala and Rotterdam, instead of 4.

AS OF FRIDAY, May 31, the Grand Prix on Sunday is still scheduled to be competed at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time on Sunday, June 2.

"There's still rain predicted for today and tomorrow, so I give it a 50-50 chance of having the Grand Prix," said Robert Ridland, chef d'equipe. "We haven't seen the sun since we left Rome, so I'm looking forward to seeing the sun in La Baule next week.

Natalie Dean, Katie Dinan, Callie Schott and Spencer Smith are the riders in St. Gallen, which was one of the competition set to evaluate riders for the team to compete in the Paris Olympics.

"St. Gallen won't be a factor for that now," said Ridland.

Karl Cook on Caracole de la Roque won the Grand Prix in Rome on May 26.

The Rome Grand Prix is a two round class, with the top 25 percent of the riders in the first round qualifying for the second round, in which they go in reverse order of qualifying.

"There were 14 clean in the first round, but only the top 13 qualified for the second round," said Ridland. "I don't like that format, where a clean round doesn't get to go in the jump-off."

"Karl was clean and the fastest in the first round, so he went last in the second round, and he was fastest again, so he won," said Ridland.

Cook finished clean in 38.27 to beat Max Kuhner of Austria on Electric Blue P, clean in 39.58, and Petronella Andersson of Sweden on Odiana Van Klapscheut, clean in 39.78.

Aaron Vale on Carissimo and Lillie Keenan on Argan de Beliard had four faults each, while Adrienne Sternlicht and Alise Oken had eight faults each.

"We had a good show," said Ridland. "Tied for third in the Nations Cup but fourth on time and then winning the Grad Prix. It was very exciting to have Karl win the Grand Prix."
