Zone 2 won the silver medal in the Youth Junior Championships for Young Riders

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.--The Zone 2 Team of Mimi Gochman of New York, N.Y., on Celina BH, Madison Rauschenbach of Newburgh, N.Y., with Gilette B, Sophee Steckbeck of Greenwich, Conn., on Clarima, and Ned Cunniffe of South Salem, N.Y., with Buckle Up won the silver medal in the Gotham North FEI North American Youth Jumper Championships for Young Riders on Aug. 14.

In a shakeup of events, Zone 4 would make the jump from fourth place to second following the first round of competition, putting themselves in contention for a medal.

Zone 4 teammates Erika Jakobson, Riley Delbecq, Violet Lindemann Barnett and Ashley Vogel had no faults in Round One with their drop score considered.

AS ROUND 2 progressed, it became apparent that it would be down to the wire as teams fought for their spot on the podium.

Austin Krawitt rode a steady course for Team Canada, guaranteeing him and his teammates at least a bronze medal for their 27.98 combined penalties.

Vogel was the penultimate athlete aboard Bellissimo Z,and she was clean, giving Zone 4 a 15.79 combined penalties.

Zone 2’s Gochman was the final rider to take compete, and she had yet another clear performance for Zone 2.

But, Zone 2’s combined penalties of 20.21 would place them second to  Zone 4 and just over Canada, forcing them to settle for the silver medal while Zone 4 had the gold and Canada was the bronze medal team.

Gochman still leads the way in the Individual competition with Celina BH.

As the only pair sitting on zero faults from Thursday and Friday’s competition, Gochman praised the 11-year-old Holsteiner mare’s performances, adding that she still feels like she has plenty of gas left in the tank headed into Sunday’s Individual Final.

“Celina BH was excellent and I couldn’t have asked her to be any better," said Gochman. "She was right there with me. It’s a little harder to lead the Individual standings this time around but I try not to think too much about it. I try not to get too excited because it’ll make me ride anxious or make Celina BH anxious, and I really believe the horses can feel what you’re feeling.”

In addition to taking home the gold and silver medals, the top two nations of the Young Rider category also qualify for the 2021 FEI Youth Nations Cup Jumping Final, set to take place at the Peelbergen Equestian Centre, in Kronenberg, Netherlands on September 23-26, 2021.

Gochman had also led the individual standings after the first competition, going into the team final, and she spoke of her plan at that point.

“My plan was to just go smooth and not to flatten her out before the team event, but to still go forward and get after it because I’ve made the mistake of going too slow on the first day, and that was detrimental to my individual score and to the team. I wanted to go in there and get her going. She hasn’t jumped in a while, so she was nice and fresh and excited, and she was revved to go,” said Gochman. “It’s always an honor to qualify for a team. I did the Juniors two years ago and I was so excited, and now I’m doing Young Riders. It’s such an honor to be on the Zone 2 Team. It’s a prestigious event and so many competitive riders come. Since the sport is such an individual sport, it’s nice to get together with other riders and try to ride for your team. Sometimes it doesn’t go the way that you want, but we have teamwork with our horses, but it’s always good to ride for the team.”

In the Junior category, the Zone 4 Team started their competition week off on the right foot and leads the standings after the $5,000 Junior First Competition presented by Grand Traverse Resort & Spa on a converted team total of 6.15 penalties.

The team includes Zayna Rizvi of Wellinton, Fla., on Excellent, Ansgar Holtgers Jr. of Wellington, Fla., on Elina, Reid Arani of Wellington, Fla., with Ziezo, and Hailey Royce of Wellington, Fla., onSonic Boom.

Team Canada sits in second place in the team standings with 8.62 penalties and the team from Zone 2 round out the top three placings on 10.62 combined penalties heading into tomorrow’s team medal competition.

The Zone 2 Team of Emily Dehoff of Far Hills, N.J, on G CT Super Sonic, Audrey Schulze of Saddle River, N.J., on Mr. Cash, Gwyneth Babington of Gwynedd Valley, Penn., with Mark Q, and Emily Aitken of Bedford, N.Y., with Binja are within striking distance of both the Zone 4 Team, and Team Canada and will look to move up the leaderboard for their final day of team competition.
